Feature/Unfeature Comments

I was hoping I could work with someone on this project to create a modular plugin for these modifications I made to s9y. I made these modifications several years ago on 0.89 and just updated them for 1.12.

Here's a little background:

One of my clients wants to allow comments on their web site. However, they would like to "feature" particularly good comments and "hide" others. They do not want to delete the "hidden" comments. This was a criteria of the blog, which is why I chose to host it on s9y.

I am pasting the steps I used to make this feature. If anyone can point me in the direction for making this modular it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!

Phew. That's a tough one, because it touches many areas - both the database, templates, the frontend AND the backend.

For developing this into a plugin, the most critical thing would be to NOT put the "is_featured" column into the serendipity_comments table, but instead to create your own table for it, like "serendipity_featured_comments". There you can simply hold a list of comment-ids that are featured.

You can then used the fetchcomments etc. API hooks to join your table with the resultset of the comments ($eventData) you already have, which will make the variable available in that large array.

Then you'd need to see if those are generically assigned into the comments.tpl template file; if not, the core s9y code would need to be patched to assign all other variables that come from plugins as well. Of course I would add this to the s9y core, if that mod was required.

As for the backend actions, we would need to maybe insert new API hooks for displaying additional toggling links, and an action hook where you save those.

Would you like to have a look at that? Adding new API hooks into the s9y is just a matter of inserting the "serendipity_plugin_api::hook_event(...)" line, with a unique event hook name you can invent.

I'd like to assist you in developing the plugin, but I'm currently pretty short on time - so everything you could have a look at with would largely help me. Maybe you'd try to implement the first ideas I had and see if that works out for you?

The idea of featured comments is a great one, I like that idea! Maybe there is a generic solution so that we can somehow add the functionality to the frontend output without the need to edit the comments.tpl file - because then it would work in every template. :)

I as well have been short on time, which is why I am so late responding to your reply.

I would be happy to start on your suggestions. I am taking the current hacked version of s9y live on the client's site today. When we move to their next blog, I will use your suggestions.

What should I do to get the "new/modular" code to you? Post it here?

I'm note sure if I understood correctly - you already modularized your code? That would be awesome, because non-moduluar code that might touch many areas in the code would be hard to faciliate into the main project... :)
