Is Serendipity the right application?

Hi,
I'm new to Serendipity and was hoping you could help in deciding if it is the right application for a (hopefully) simple website.
I would like to have a site where users could self-register and then compose written material for eventual publishing on the site. The users would be able to work in a simple WYSIWIG editor, add images, format text and so on. If possible, multiple users could collaborate on a written work, but each user's work would be private until published or shared with selected users. The written material could be a novel, poems, family history, biography, etc., but not really a true "blog". What do you think? I don't really need a lot of the blog functionality. Would Serendipity be the right application, or would it be forcing it to do something it wasn't intended to do?
