Idea: Serendipity User Center

Hey!

Serendipity is the leader in media. Look at the Media Library and the vast amount of plugins and you would conclude that there's no other system which offers so much functions. But there is also a part that is not as flexible as some people may want: The user management. For example, I've spent a weekend on making the possibility for users to register, login and edit their profiles easily and secure. (Well, it didn't take up a whole weekend, but you get the idea. :) )

So what about creating one plugin (or even integrate it inside the core), which offers all the functionality that you need for managing your users? That will include features like:
- Edit profiles.
- Receive mail when a new entry is posted, without a mailinglist.
- Make entries in their own category.

Many of this things are already possible when you use several plugins, but with one User Center everything gets really easy! :D

Please provide any feedback here... What functions can we include in this project? Is this a good idea, or should I spend my freetime on other things? :)

Its an exceptionally good idea! Anything we can do to streamline some of the more complex areas of s9y are definitely worth pursuing.

Hi!

There's a central problem I see: It will duplicate functionality, and I hate duplicate functionality, especially in our official plugin repository.

We can't take the options away from the current plugins, because current users would then miss those options.

I personally think that the user-self registration plugin and the userprofiles plugin do have distinct and seperate usages, which make it worth to have them seperate, and allow people who want both functionality to use both.

Instead of an Überplugin, I really like to keep things clean and focussed.

Of course I understand Davids argument, and I can't really deny it. Such a plugin would be nice, however my problem is with backwards compatibility and existing usage cases. :(

$0.02 :)

Best regards,
Garvin

Well, there's actually one thing I'm missing in all plugins: Send entries to subscribed users, without that tricky mailinglist. So I think I'm going to create it (in first case for myself).

Hi!

A mailinglist is required, abusing PHP for this is simply not what a webserver is meant for.

Also you have RSS to notify users. ;) I strongly disblief in the concept of mass-mailing new blog entries to individual users.

Best regards,
Garvin

As I don't have mass users, it can be done on my server. :) The same happens while receiving mail when a new comment is posted.
