Need urgent help, cannot access my S9Y site [RESOLVED]

**This issue has been resolved, see last post**

Ok, maybe I screwed up. I have my own install of S9Y (version 1.1) hosted with Godaddy. I just upgraded to their "Web Configuration 2.0" interface.

Here are the listed "benefits".
Upgrading to the Hosting Configuration 2.0 results in the following benefits:

* Support for PHP 5
With PHP 5 support, you can program using the latest version of this server-side scripting language and take advantage of existing applications and add ons written in PHP 5. You can also run both PHP 4 and PHP 5 simultaneously on the same site.

* Support for Python 2.4
The latest version of Python -- 2.4 -- is supported.

* Support for Ruby and Ruby on Rails
The scripting language Ruby is now supported, along with its application framework, Ruby on Rails. The new hosting configuration also incorporates FastCGI to maximize Ruby on Rails performance.

* Scripting Flexibility
CGI, Perl, or Python scripts no longer have to be uploaded to and run from the cgi directory. The new hosting configuration allows any file with a .cgi, .py, or .pl extension to be run from any folder within your Web site.

* Custom PHP 4 and PHP 5 initialization files You can now customize your site by creating PHP initialization files in the root of your site to manage form, server, and environmental variables, server-side cookies, temporary directories, error display, and error logging.

* Administration
The new hosting configuration has a dedicated administration interface from which you can manage and maintain cgi apps, library versions, Perl, and Ruby on Rails.
So I did it, now I cannot access my site at all, including my ADMIN! :( The do have a page that talks about the risks of upgrading to this new config.
Before upgrading to Hosting Configuration 2.0, it is important to realize that your site may experience technical problems after the upgrade. For security reasons, the new hosting configuration disables "exec cmd" for the execution of programs from server-side include-enabled pages. Any code using this method will not function correctly after the upgrade.
I am not a programmer, but does any of the above indicate that S9Y should stop working??

Any help is definitely welcome. I DO have access to my S9Y installation through FTP, but as I mentioned I cannot access the web admin screen. :cry: :cry:

Not much details... Have you tried to delete (or rename) your .htaccess, which should be located in your s9y root?

Not too much details? What else do you need? ? Yes I deleted the .htaccess file (not sure what that would do) but my website is still not accessible.

How about an error? Do you get anything at all when you try to go there? Have you checked the logs? (Not sure if you have access to the logs or not, but I'm guessing yes)

None of that should effect Serendipity. It doesn't use "exec cmd", works fine in PHP 4 or 5, and isn't written in Python.

However, they don't mention PHP among the programs that can be executed. Hmmm.

What errors are you getting when you try to access your blog? Obviously you expect to see the blog; some unexpected output must be occurring. Blank page? Ugly page? Error message?

Can you give us the URL where you expect the blog to be? Sometimes we can tell more from looking at the page source or using the FireBug extension to load the page.

PHP is supported. This morning my website was working just fine, GoDaddy told me everyone is being migrated over to this new Host Configuration.

I don't know could have changed but all I get when I pull up my site is a blank page in Firefox. In IE is say it cannot connect as if the website is down.

You can try it yourself and see. :(

I opened up a ticket with GoDaddy on this as well. For some reason the website is not even connecting after this update!

I have 3 domains. 2 of them are running S9Y. The two sites that run S9Y are NOT connecting, while the other one (which is NOT using S9Y) is working just fine. Very odd.

Ok it's fixed! It was on Godaddy's side! They attempted to blame S9Y but I knew better! It was something on their end with the "upgrade" to their hosting servers.

Might I suggest that you pursue this a little and get an exact reason? That way you have some firepower in the future should it happen again... :)

Of course, that's just the way I would do it.. "It broke and we fixed it" is definitely not an acceptable answer to me..

I agree, I have a ticket still open with them, it needed to be escalated. As of now the site appears to be down again! Believe it or not. :( I am going to have to move to a different host if this keeps happening.

What with their ancient default installation of Serendipity, lack of access to the databases, and generally unhelpful attitude, GoDaddy has been giving us trouble for a while. Unfortunately, I don't have a recommendation to make, as I'm also looking for new hosting: PowWeb just closed up a bunch of ports, and I'd like an environment that was a bit more free.

If you find a nice place, let us know!

Well I use my own install of Serendipity. I do have access to the database from their control panel and can get to phpMyAdmin in order to manage the database. But yeah, their support is "okay". I finally spoke to a Supervisor today and they escalated my issue to their top support team. The could not tell me what happened, but everything is solved and now the site is fully accessible again. They *do* say the update to this new Hosting Config can take 24 to resolve itself, but they have never seen an issue where it renders the site unaccessible.

But yeah if I can find a more reliable host, even if I have to pay more, I'd definitely switch.

To be fair, this is the first downtime I have ever experienced with them.

judebert, if you don't mind, would you mind clicking around my site real quick to see if you think it is slow at all? It always takes a bit to load, I wonder if that is just how S9Y works or it's the host. It doesn't "pop up" super quick. Thanks!

The first load was pretty slow; it might have been your GamerCard, though. The rest were about what I expect from average hosting. I've seen stuff pop up much faster, but I've also seen slower connections.

In general, I tend to attribute the slow load times to poor database connectivity or performance. I'm going to load FireBug to see if it can help me diagnose these problems in the future.

You're definitely right, though: things don't just pop up like we wish they would.
