Receiving an email when a new post is sended

Hello!!

Is there the possibility to receive an email when a new post in the blog?

I only have seen the option to receive emails when comments are posted to our own entries.

But we're thinking in the possibility to subscribe to a category, in order to receive an email when a new post is submitted in the category.....any idea? any solution?

Please, this question is very very important for us.

Yes, you can use the "Send entries via E-Mail" plugin (bundled with serendipity).

You should use RSS for this kind of subscription, that's what RSS was invented for.

I think you haven't really taken a look at RSS, although I admit it is a concept which is rather difficult to understand for beginners

First of all, you don't have to "install" RSS. Also, RSS doesn't have anything to do with email, it is not a technique to send email or something.

Any Serendipity powered blog automagically creates the so-called RSS feeds, which are basically XML files. This is a new type of file, which can be read using a so-called feed reader or feed aggregator. Basically, whenever the user checks for updated feeds (which the user has to subscribe to), it will show you whether there's a new item in the feed (i.e., a new entry is posted to the blog).

I'm very bad at explaining this, so I suggest you ask aunty Google, she has much more knowledge than I do

only additional: today you (and your readers ) do not need an extra feed reader. every modern browser (opera, firefox and even IE) can display this feeds! try it and click onto the RSS-logo in the adress bar on the right of your blog.

Hi!!

Now it is supposed that with browsers I can have a client-side reader.
But I don't know how to use it. Any idea?
Perhaps I don't have the browsers versions properly:
Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800
Mozilla: 1.7.8

I've read also that Email readers can have support for RSS feeds integrated, can't they?
I've Thunderbird 1.5.0.8

Could someone help to me in order to obtain some view with the option to receive an email when a new post is submitted to an specific category in serendipity, please?

Hi!

Maybe you can search the web for some "RSS to email" or "rss e-mail" or "rss mail notification" hints. I think that there are services that offer this.

HOWEVER the idea is NOT to use E-Mail anymore! Only use a RSS client or the RSS integration of a browser. Then your BROWSER or RSS-CLIENT will notify you of updates to a page, not an email.

This is called "Pull-Synchronization" instead of "Push-Synchronization" (like E-Mail). It has many advantages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rss

I've found how to manage the subscription to the RSS feed blog:

1) With the Mozilla Firefox, there is a Menu called "Marcadores" (bookmarks) with the option "Subscribirse a esta pagina" (Subscribe to this page).
If you have a blog displayed in the Mozilla Firefox, with the option "Subscribirse a esta pagina", the program creates a dinamic bookmark as a menu. And with the option refresh it can be updated.
In the menu a feed icon making the orange square with white radio waves appears in order to access to the entries of the blog.

2) With the Mozilla Thunderbird mail, following the instructions from:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/RSS_basics_(Thunderbird)
I can obtain all the entries in the blog in my mail!!

But......I've still a question not solved:

In these ways, I've had to declare a url for the rss feed of the blog:
http://159.23.98.66/serendipity/index.p ... index.rss2
in my case, but....this give me all the entries of the blog, and I would like to have the possibility to choose for category, so, I imagine that in the serendipity blog I need a RSS feed for each category.
Anyone has any idea to do this??

Just use that little RSS icon displayed in front of each category in the Categories sidebar plugin. That gives you an RSS feed for that particular category only. Od course you'll have to install and configure that plugin first in case you haven't already

Also, you can configure the number of entries to display in a feed using "Configuration" -> "Appearance and Options" -> "Entries to display in Feeds". However, it doesn't really make sense to display all entries in a feed. See, I, for example, have about 600 entries in my blog up to now. And I definitely don't want new feed subscribers to have to get all of them using a feed reader

As I don't have the plugin Categories enabled because I have the Category Tree Menu plugin instead, I've learned to make RSS subscriptions with the following rule:

When I am in an specific category, I can see its url, for example:
http://159.23.98.66/serendipity/index.p ... -platforms

And when I create a new subscription in my Mozilla Thunderbird, the url that I must put is:
http://159.23.98.66/serendipity/index.p ... tforms.rss

So, only add the feeds directory between index.php? and categories, and add the extension to the last name.

Mission completed!!
