Using the DEFAULT template

As suggested in the documentation I used the default template, various plugins, and simply edited the styles.css to achieve this look:

I love the ease at which Serendipity installed. Most problems that have occured have been solved by simply reading your Forum. Personalizing the look and feel of the site was painless with a bit of html/css knowledge.
