Plugins: visual indication updated versions?

Post by hgoor »

Right now you have to go to the Spartacus Plugin page to see if there are any updated versions of plugins you have installed.

It would be nice if *any* of the following would be possible (maybe in release 1.1 of Serendipity):

1) indication of upated plugins after login page
2) indication of updated plugins at installed plugins page (color?)

That way I do not have to check manually to see if there is an updated plugin?

I guess this means that Spartacus somehow has to interact with the plugin page?

Anyway: I would very much like this functionality...

Interesting idea. Updating SPARTACUS from the respository can take a while, which is why we don't do it there. And of course, not everyone has SPARTACUS installed, and some people have firewalled servers.

How about a "Check for Updates" link on the "Configure Plugins" page? I know it's an extra step, and that it does require at least a manual click, but I think we could filter the output to include only plugins you have installed, making the examination much easier.

Did that make sense? I am kinda tired. Let me know if you think this will fit your needs.

Sorry, when I said plugin page I meant of course the "configure plugins" page. So yeah: that would be nice.

Also: Why not do a depency check thingy: no spartacaus, no updates? Or, why not a RSS feed like update? That doesn't require Sparatacus maybe?

I think we've discussed SPARTACUS RSS feeds before. Garvin will remember, I'm sure.

The dependency thing can only check whether SPARTACUS is installed, not whether we're firewalled. I'm working on that separately. In my spare time.

Yeah, I understand: more less it would be a check if Sparatacus exists and then the user might have to indicate if he/she is firewalled...

Actually, come to think of it: if people have Sparatacus and are able to use it, you know it would work anyway?

Why not make it a plugin or extension to/part of Spartacus? Except the indication is on the configure plugins page (and or after login: I have a RSS plugin there anyway?)

Hi!

I just committed a new functionality to 1.1 that will show two new buttons "Check for new event" and "Check for new sidebar" plugins. There, one can then see a list of all plugins that can be upgraded.

Best regards,
Garvin

No surprise -- Garvin does that all the time. That's one of the things that makes Serendipity the best blog I've ever seen.
