I have installed Serendipity BLOG on my site....but I do not see a feature that allows new people to register to create an account.

Can someone help ?

How are new users supposed to create their own blogs when there is no REGISTER section for people to register an account ?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Hi!

Registering users can be done through the "User Self-Rgistration" plugin that is available through spartacus / spartacus.s9y.org.

But new users cannot create their own blogs with this. Serendipity is a multi-user blog application of a single blog, and not some kind of blogger.com. It can be bent into some directions (keyword "Shared Installation" or "Multi-Category Blog", but maybe it's not what you're looking for.

Garvin

Thanks Garvin.

I don't fully understand this. I can create multiple users accounts through Serendipity's Admin's control panel. Why wouldn't they let people create or register their own accounts ?

It's so cumbersome every time someone wants to start a web journal, he or she has to go through me in order to create an account.

If the script allows multiple users to create their own blog, why wouldn't the script allow people to register themselves ? I don't understand the logic for that. Am I missing something ?

Thanks again for replying.....

Hi!

As I told you, the "Self User-Registration" plugin allows people to create user accounts. But a user account does not mean that a user has his own blog. It just means he can post on the blog he registered on.

The other "web journal creation" method is what I wrote with "bent into some directions".

Best regards,
Garvin

To expound a little, Serendipity is delivered -- by default -- for the most common blogging case: a single blogger keeping a web journal. But its plugins let it do just about anything. The "Self User-Registration" plugin eliminates the big problem you've mentioned: it allows users to register themselves, much as the name would imply. Since -- by default -- S9Y is a single-user blog, this plugin just allows multiple authors to post to the blog.

If that's what you want, install the plugin and you're done. But when you said in your first post that you wanted people to "create their own blogs", it seemed you wanted something else. S9Y is a single blog, not a blog portal.

That said, you can get a similar effect with categories. There's even another plugin to give each category its own template, so each category-blog could be customized.

But, if you want to give the users actual, separately administrated blogs, you'll have to do something like supersized.org did and create a registration page and new-user script that manipulates a "shared install". This incarnation of Serendipity keeps the important core files in one shared location, copying only the customizable administration files to a subdirectory for each user. More info is available by searching for "shared installation" on this forum or the Serendipity web page.

Finally, the actual reason I posted: a metaphor. Serendipity is a 1971 VW Beetle (my personal favorite). It comes ready to do the job most people need. But there are so many options for customization, it's staggering. And not just in the "add a spoiler" or "new paint job" way, either. You can make it into a drag racer, a gas-sipper, a rally car, a dune buggy, or a bass blaster just by adding a few readily-available kits.

Enough people wanted multiple authors on a single blog that there's an aftermarket kit available: the "User Self-Registration" plugin. But if you want a blog portal, you'll have to do some custom work. Someone has already made a script to help you, but you'll have to search to find it, and then you'll probably want to modify it to suit your own purposes.

THANKS guys ! Sorry, I know nothing about blogs.......hence the confusion.

I cannot spend a lot of time on this, but in need of getting the blog set up ASAP . Actually the blog is up already, but need the script or plug in that you guys talked about , I guess.

I am not sure if this is appropriate to mention it here, but will someone be interested in doing some consulting work for me in order to set up the blog ? If interested, please either post here or email me with details about your fees etc. You can reach me at restivoevents@aol.com

I am satisfied with the way the blog is presently set up on my site. All I need is a script or plug-in that allows my site's members to register or login so that he or she can create their own blog off my site.

Right now, if members of my site want to create his own blog, he will have to go through me, very complicated.

Pls let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks and much appreciated.
