In other words, I have a lot of uncategorized entries that need to be placed in a category. Is there a way to do this without opening each entry and setting the category? Is there code I could add that says uncategoried entries are this category?

Actually, yes! 
There is a spartacus plugin "Assign Categories" where you can batch-assign entries to categories.
Fetch it via spartacus or here: http://spartacus.s9y.org/cvs/additional ... gories.zip
