"Internal server error"

Post by Hanjo Iwanowitsch »

Dear Reader,

I installed a new Serendipity blog on lbsmalente.lernnetz.de/serendipity - it should become the homepage for a school.

[I tried it before on my private homepage (http://www.ats20.de/serendipity) - there it worked without problems, I showed it to my colleagues and they were happy we would get such a nice homepage ...]

This time when I called lbsmalente.lernnetz.de/serendipity it showed just the above mentioned Error page - no chance for begining the configuration.

In the error log there is one message concerning S9y:

"[Sun Feb 26 11:36:13 2006] [error] [client 84.141.169.31] Premature end of script headers: /home/virtual/site335/fst/var/www/html/serendipity/index.php"

For the installation on my old server worked I installed it for testing instead of the new installation - the error is the same.

I think I read every forum message about similar problems: for that I

- changed the permissions of the serendipity folder and everything in it to 777
- did it again for serendipity_config_local.inc.php
- deleted the .htaccess file
- deleted everything from time to time
- installed everything again from time to time
- took my old .htaccess file from ats20.de/serendipity
- tried to install everything in the root of the server instead of in a directory
- did everything again for I thought I could have forgotten something.

Any hints? Do you know about the meaning of the error codes above? Are changes to be made by the admin of the webspace?

TIA.

The Error "Premature end of script headers" is very important.

This shows that PHP is not properly working on your server. The type of error message can only happen on PHP CGI installations.

Are other PHP applications on that server properly working? You'll need to check the PHP installation and tell me which version you are using, preferably an output of a <?php phpinfo(); ?> script.

Best regards,
Garvin

Moin Garvin,

I put the PHP-Script on the server, so you could look it up at <http://www.lbsmalente.de/info.php>.

The only other PHP-Sript I had on the server so far was a guestbook-script. It worked (see at <http://www.lbsmalente.de/gb/guestbook.php>).

Regards,
Hanjo.

Hm, your PHP there looks quite old and configured with a few non-standard extensions.

Can you contact your server admin and ask him for debugging? The CGI process seems to die in the middle of the process. You could try on the commandline calling the CGI from PHP via "php /path/to/s9y/index.php" and see if it generates errors. Or closely watch your syslog/errorlog/php errorlog.

The CGI also uses SafeMode which could be a problem, so I'm afraid you'll need to talk to a server admin. :-)

Best regards,
Garvin
