I was wondering how is the number of hits shown at the bottom of each posting is measured and accounted?
How accurate is that?

It is accurate since it tracks ALL hits to individual pages for entries. At least if oyu're refering to the hitcounter from the karma plugin.
However, it cannot track hits to entries that have no extended body, since then people can read the entry on your startpage and need not click on the entry.
Also, the plugin counts hits from every spambot and spiderbot.
