there is a forum plugin, and adding a link to the sidebar is easy.
1) Forum. Go to the plugin menu and choose "install a new event plugin" first. Then install the SPARTACUS-Plugin. Spartacus is a plugin that allows you to install all other plugins directly from the web, without having to install them manually. (your /plugin directory needs to be writeable if you work with spartacus)
2) After that install another eventplugin: the discussion forum.
3) You can configure the static url of the forum in the plugin menu. e.g you call it "forum"
4) So the link to the forum should be:
http://www.yourdomain.com/yourserenditp ... page]=name
5) go back to the plugin menu and this time install a sidebar plugin, the HTML block
6) enter the link into the block
7) thats it.

@Garvin: Shouldn´t "how do I add a link to the sidebar" be part of the FAQ?
