Hello
I've pretty much spent the last 12 hours trying to install serendipity and cannot solve the htaccess issue that seems to be a common problem for some folks.
I wonder if there is a facility at s9y to have the software installed for you.
Could someone in admin let me know if this is possible.
Thanks very much.

Well, it's it's an .htaccess problem, then it must be rewriting the URLs in a
way that s9y's not accessing the files correctly (as per your other thread).
s9y should 'just work' right out of the box, but IF there's no weird .htaccess
on the root messing with subfolders. I do have .htaccess configured at my
website but it's a pretty basic one and doesn't seem to affect my s9y install.
So... hmm.. I'm guessing the 'manual startup' of the installation page didn't
quite work?

Hi Wesley
Thanks for you reply.
On installation I get this message:
"To check your local webserver installation, serendipity needs to be able to write the file ".htaccess". This was not possible because of permission errors.
I have checked the permissions are 777 for the serendipity folder as per instructions.
I don't have an .htaccess file in my directory.
I'm pretty much out of ideas.
I'd be willing to pay someone to install this for me if anyone's interested.

.htaccess files are usually not shown by ftp programms. or you have to enable the programm to show these files. often a file shows up you had no idea that it was there.

it's most likely an ownership problem.
if you can list the owners of the files and see that the .htaccess is owned by something different from the other folders then it's an ownership issue. If you do not have shell access you will need to get your ISP to change it for you.
This is common with virtual servers and there is nothing you an do except either move or continaully ask you ISP to change the ownership for you.
ownership is not a problem if you are simply running a blog. But if you are experimenting etc then it's a real pain.
I now have a s9y sandbox setup on my local machine and get everything configured locally, then i ftp all the files to the server so that the ownership remains with me and not the server (usually "apache").
ownership changes when you download plugins via spartacus or you make change to .htaccess via the admin suite. Again this is not a problem in normal operation, only if you want to change things later.

If you PM me with your FTP account data, I can get it installed for you - if you like, that is.
