Publishing problem

I have just uploaded 0.8.2 to my webserver.. all was going great.. did the install (no issues) and tried to publish my first blog... which doesn't seem to work .... I can save them as drafts, but they do not seem to publish...
I get the message
Serendipity is now saving your entry, creating trackbacks and performing possible XML-RPC calls. This may take a while..
it gives me (what i'm assuming) is a preview screen... and the edit box.. but it never publishes (in the preview nor on the main page)...
any insight would be helpful
