Hi,
We have an existing website, based on smarty. We are now looking for a backend CMS system to be able to edit a few of the pages/templates. Can we use Serendipity for this (as I think it is also smarty)?

No, you can't. Serendipity uses Smarty templates to present its own data; you cannot use it to edit existing Smarty-frameworked pages, that is like wanting to use apples to make orange juice, just because they both are fruits.
For what you want, you need to build your own framework or switch to a CMS...
