As the subject says I just installed Serendipity and for the most part it works fine. But I just tried to upload some photos to the media db using the admin panel and when i try and upload multiple images or one image at time it immediately comes back with a connection reset error. I am certain it is something stupid and simple to fix like a file permission or the like but I have no clue what the actual issue is. I just know when I try to upload an image the connection is immediately reset when I click GO.

Any thoughts?

Just to get some more information, do you have any further info on the webspace/server the blog is running on, any special stuff? You can get those pretty easily by uploading a file containing:
via FTP or ssh and calling it in a browser, then post the outout here.

You're not by chance trying this with images larger than 2 MB only, are you?

No, I am not. I just checked the first 5 of 42 images that I am trying to upload and the largest was 335K.
Is that a hard limit 2MB? Thats good to know for the future.

No, if you have access to or can set your own php.ini (which is pretty common even on affordable webhosting), you can tweak that.

I'm out of ideas here, probably because PHP/server stuff is not my biggest area of expertise, sorry. Oh, it's a long shot, but have you tried uploading images in different browsers?

Anyone? Garvin will probably have some ideas when he gets back from vacation at the end of the week.

you could try and set a max execution time between 30 and 60 (sec)...!?

But for me it sounds more like your serendipity/uploads dir needs some better permissions... Try with 0775 or even 0777.
What exactly does your connection reset error say?

The error is:

Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset.

Same error before and after changing the upload dir to 777. :/

I don't know why this could happen with S9y, I would have to google myself..., it does not sound to be bound to Serendipity only...

Did you try another browser (not chrome) and/or another connection just to test?

Hmm interesting. Problem still exists with chrome and firefox, so on your last suggestion I fired up Safari on my MBP and Hiawatha the web server spits out a "413 - Request entity too large". The size of the image I am trying to upload is:

Problem solved. The last error posted after trying with Safari gave me a clue what was wrong, since the original errors gave me nothing to go on. The issue is not Serendipity at all, it's with the Hiawatha web server. By default it has a very small, IMO, amount of data that can be sent in a request. 64K. Obviously this is why it would not accept my modestly sized image files that averaged around 300K. After getting no helpful error information from Chrome or Firefox and on Timbalu's suggestion to try another browser I fired up Safari and got the helpful error I needed to figure out the issue. Safari spit out a "413 - Request entity too large" error. This came from the web server NOT serendipity. But it was at least helpful enough to trying to tell me that I am uploading more data than the web server is prepared to take. So with that bit of information it took three seconds to find the following in Hiawathas man page:

MaxRequestSize = <size>
The maximum size of a request in kilobytes the webserver is allowed to receive. This does not include PUT requests.
Default = 64, example: MaxRequestSize = 256

With that, I changed my hiawatha.conf to include "MaxRequestSize = 15360" in the Binding section of my config and restarted. Uploaded the image again and serendipity took it with zero issues. So anyone in the future that comes across this issue hopefully will reference this post and simply change their hiawatha config to include the MaxRequestSize line to something large enough to handle whatever size of data they are trying to upload into serendipity. I want to apologize to Timbalu, and Yellowled for wasting their time and chasing a red herring. I had initially no other information to go on but that the connection was timing out, which tells me nothing, and had to start looking somewhere and started with Serendipity. That was incorrect and I should have started with Hiawatha. Perhaps a small entry could be made in the documentation for Serendipity that users using the Hiawatha web server need to be aware that the amount of data for uploading is set fairly low by default in the web server and that they need to change their config to allow the appropriate size data to be uploaded.

Thank you again for all your help and suggestions, and sorry again for the noise. Serendipity is a great piece of software.

Yes we should have some small documentary about these, well ... uncommon servers, which do have their limits. We had another one here in the forum, which did funny things in paticular to S9y too, but I even can't remember its name. But this has to wait for Gravins return.
