version 1.6 login problems

I recently updated to 1.6 (thanks, Don!) and I can't log in. I keep getting the dreaded "You appear to have entered an invalid username or password" message.
I have searched the forum for previous posts about login issues and I have tried the recommended fixes via the database, but nothing is working!

Site experienced a problem unrelated to the 1.6 upgrade. As part of their solution, the hosting provider restored an older copy of the database. That database did not have the new 1.5 sha1 with salted hash. I simply told serendipity to upgrade itself by setting the version number back to 1.4.1 in serendipity_config_local.inc.php.
