Making Serendipity SEO friendly?

Post by Jragon »

Hi!

Instantly, I can see that the default theme is really not SEO friendly.

I don't know much about SEO at all.. But I know it matters....

I just need some tips and tricks or a plugin to make Serendipity SEO friendly

Thanks

If you don't, how do you know the default theme is not SEO-friendly?

I'm not an SEO expert myself, in fact I consider it to be pointless. Anyway, here are some pointers:

* Use a different theme; default is pretty much outdated. Can't really recommend a specific one for SEO, but basically, any modern s9y theme should be an improvement. Look for the "last updated" info in the themes section to tell how old themes might be.
* Use search-engine friendly URLs using the mod_rewrite Apache module.
* There are some plugins on http://spartacus.s9y.org which can help with SEO, mostly though meta elements (description/keywords), but it's debatable to what extent they actually do help with SEO.
* Most important on-site tool: Produce good content.
* Produce incoming links by sites with similar content.

The event plugin "HTML Link Metatags" will have a beneficial SEO impact... another good tip is to use hyperlinks in one entry that point to another entry on your own site.... ie, "as we discussed in our earlier entry INSERT HYPERLINK TO EARLIER ENTRY HERE, blah blah blah... ".

But, as Yellowled said, quality, and frequently updated, content will blow all the tricks away.

The freetag event plugin can automate that to some extent by inserting links to a specified number of similarly tagged articles into the entry footer. But like with almost any so-called "SEO trick", it's up to speculation how much this actually works to your benefit. It might as well bite you in the back because Google decided to penalize said trick.
