How do spam comments avoid my spam filter?

For the third time in recent months I'm getting a lot of spam comments and need to block comments temporarily. I assume that these are being posted automatically rather than manually, in which case I don't understand how they get round the requirement to copy the scrambled code before posting. Anyone know how this is done, and what, if anything, can be done to prevent it?

Options for you:
.) Afair there is an option, that the given email adress has to be verified befor the comment is visable.
.) You could also require signup before posting comments.
.) Have you already tried the bayse plugin?

I've just found that my query about captcha evasion is answered in the Serendipity documentation.

Done this already.

I could, but I know it usually puts me off from commenting on other people's blogs. I don't get enough spam to justify it.
