Comments don't appear, new posts require password
Hi
The last time I was here I could write German, but I can't find that now. All the posts seem to be in English. But I am English, so I will write English.
I am using the last-but-one version of s9y.
For some time now, when I create a new post, the tags box contains my name, which is impossible, and there is a box down further that requires a password under 'Entries can be read by ...'. The password is shown as a series of dots. I delete it, or else no-one can comment.
On my latest post (transblawg.eu), I was unable to delete this password. Now someone has commented, but the comment won't post. When I click on the comment, I get a new screen requiring a password.
I can't find anything in the configuration or plugins that I could have altered. But I must have changed something, because it's the same software. I would be grateful for advice.
Regards
Margaret

Hi Margaret
There still is a 'Generelles in Deutsch' Forum on the forum start page....Zirbelholz wrote:Hi

You are using 1.2 and it is strongly recommended to upgrade to latest 1.5.5 version, since there were security issues. Please read the Announcement section of this forum and http://blog.s9y.org/archives/224-Import ... eased.htmlZirbelholz wrote:I am using the last-but-one version of s9y.
This has to do something with entryproperties. You must have set a password when writing your entry.Zirbelholz wrote:For some time now, when I create a new post, the tags box contains my name, which is impossible, and there is a box down further that requires a password under 'Entries can be read by ...'. Re: Comments don't appear, new posts require password
Thank you. No, I did not actively set a password, but every time I want to create a new entry, the password is shown, and I have to delete it. Why does it appear and how can I stop it doing to?
About the language, thanks, yes, but there used to be just one English forum and the rest in German. Assuming most users are Germans, perhaps I would be better off posting there?
TIA
Margaret

The problem seems to have sorted itself out when I used Firefox. I had been using Chrome. I still get the password pre-inserted when I click on 'new entry', but at least I can remove it.

Hi!
A benefit from updating your s9y will be that we added some code that prevents firefox from auto-filling the password there.

Garvin

Ah! yes, I heard about the problems at the time, and I have been meaning to update. I had to change several bits of English the last time, which I can't remember how to do, but perhaps this will not be necessary with the new version... Thanks for the information, Garvin.

Thats a interesting solution. Glad you sorted it out, Margaret.
Anyhow, what kind of code was added to S9y to prevent browsers auto-fill?
As I understood Margaret, she had this problem with the chrome browser.garvinhicking wrote:... that we added some code that prevents firefox from auto-filling the password there

Re: Comments don't appear, new posts require password
I have no idea how far my Chrome problems are my own fault. I am using it on Mac. Firefox tends to get very slow, so I tried Chrome, but their NotScript add-on looks very complicated to instal. Meanwhile I cannot comment on Blogspot either with Firefox (presumably my settings) or with Chrome (despite not having done much to setup) - discovered this by accident. I can comment there on Windows in a virtual machine. These browser problems were what suggested it to me to go back to Firefox, because there I could always at least delete this autofilled password - provided I remembered to.

I presume you are one of those users who like to use the browsers password remember function.
To get rid of them is somehow not easy and intuitive. Sometimes you need to save an empty passwort first, before you can enter a new one or disable the function at all.

Re: Comments don't appear, new posts require password
Ian,
Maybe you're right. Firefox does remember my s9y login password, Chrome probably not yet, but this may have been created in Firefox.
But this autofilling has only been occurring for a month or so - it used never to happen. I see that the big problem today - that I could not delete the accidentally overlooked autofilled password - was a Chrome or Chrome settings problem. But I don't see what the change of behaviour in FF has to do with FF remembering my password, which is not at all new. So I don't understand what is going on, except that it will probably stop if I update.

Yes, please continue with the update. You really have to do it independently from all other problems.
I that solves the auto-fill issue it is ok, though.

True. I just fell over this thread again and had a look if you solved your (upgrading) problem.Zirbelholz wrote:So I don't understand what is going on, except that it will probably stop if I update.
February is nearly gone and it still says: Powered by Serendipity 1.2 and PHP 4.4.8
This is something we have to remind you, that it is recommended to upgrade to latest version, which is very easy and in most cases also safe to do. But this won't help you, if you don't do an upgrade to at least PHP 5.2.x too. Ask your Provider to do this first. Maybe he already has and you just need an addition to your .htaccess file:
Code: Select all
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .phpRegards,

Re: Comments don't appear, new posts require password
Thanks for your concern. My provider is domainfactory and I am pretty sure the PHP upgrade is available.
