newbie: Trackback e-mail, but trackbacks 0 at blog

Hi,
This may be perfectly normal. I get an e-mail that says a trackback has been added to a blog entry, but when I go to the entry it shows 0 trackbacks. In each case, the e-mail is clearly spam that has nothing really to do with the subject of the entry.
I'm guessing that this could be because:
1. spam-blocking (perhaps the black-list service) got it and deleted it (?). This means the spam testing comes after the e-mail is generated.
2. the people generating the spam trackback simply removed the trackback right after making it. (?)
As you can see, I don't know how this works well enough to even speculate on it. Is there a way to get the IPs of the spammers so I can add them to some kind of blocking list locally (assuming that #1 wasn't what happened. If that's what happened I don't need to block them myself)?
I tried to search, but am drawing a blank on how to draw out just the posts I need regarding this. I am sorry if this is redundant.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
