Hello, in 2004 a friend of mine installed Serendipity 0.8.2. on my website. I didn't start to use it until recently. Since this now is an old version, I would like to update it to the latest version 1.5.1 without losing my weblog contents up to now. I have to say I'm not a professional, I just use Frontpage to work with :? Is it possible to update from my Serendipity Administration Suite, or do I have to enter my ftp.server to impliment changes (that would be complicated for me  ? My weblog can be found at http://www.vercnocke.com/serendipity , which is integrated in my main site: http://www.boutman.com. I would also like to change the url of the weblog into boutmanblog.com, is that possible?
Hope you had a joyful Christmas and wish you all the best for 2010!
Grtz, Bout (from Brusssels, Belgium)
(ps: I chose Serendipity because of its name, since "coincidence" is one of my passions  )

Hi!

Actually yes, you need to use FTP to upload teh new release onto your current directory.

Make sure to make a backup (also via FTP) of your current installation first. Also, if possible, use a tool like phpMyAdmin (often pre-installed from your domain hosters) to backup your database.

To change the blong from /serendipity to / you have to move it, which would possible lead to old, invalid links - so if your goal is absolute preservation of all content, and are unfamiliar with .htaccess/mod_rewrite URL forwarding, I woudln't go this route, and only upgrade serendipity itself.

Best regards,
Garvin

Hello Garvin, thx for the advise! Will see what I can do, if things get too complicated I'm thinking of uploading 1.5.1 into the main site, and start from scratch, making it posible to rename I hope
Grtz, I'll keep in touch, Bout
