Filtering non-author users

Hi,
latest client's system uses a looooot of users altogether, but only some of them are actual authors, i.e. writing entries. The rest of them (around 500 users) will just have to register to see hidden categories in the frontend.
Now, if someone wants to use the author filter in "Edit entries", that's likely to become unmanageable once around 500 authors come up in that list (since the non-author users will still be listed in that list).
Any chance to work around this? Is there a config option I don't see, a plugin I don't know about or can we patch this?

Like a filter for "group"?

Hi!
Nah, no option. You could simply disable changing the author to avoid that dropdown?

Obviously not an option. This is a multi-user weblog/cms installation. It should be a viable option for users to single out their own entries.
Shouldn't it be possible to somehow "flag" users that have never written an entry or are not allowed to post entries and filter them from that list?

Yeah, that could be done - but involves a few lines of PHP and SQL, and probably a config option along the way. But I must admit I don't see a general use for that, so I'm not sure that "spamming" the entryproperties plugin with such options would be helpful for everyone...

I'd be perfectly fine with patching just the entryproperties plugin (or whatever) for this particular installation as long as someone walks me through the process, i.e. chews the PHP/SQL for me
(And that someone will of course be promised my first-born, receive eternal gratitude and probably something nice and shiny, too

)

Hi!
Sure, we can do that via ICQ. Or we could use this to have our first telephone-meeting, should be fun. I'll check with my girlfriend when I can have an hour of free time.

Both fine with me. Take your time checking your schedule, I won't find time for this before Sunday myself. And we really don't have to ruin our weekend for this, so maybe some time next week would fit?
