I've been using Serendipity for some time now.

Today, I got a message "Parse error : syntax error, unexpected ' <' in ... home /u1/ftpcert/html/blog /index.php on line 581"

No one could reach my blog.

Luckily, I had a backup of index.php, and got it working again.

How did the file get an unexpected '<' ?

What can I do to keep it from happening again?

How exactly did your index.php file look at that mentioned line? This sounds like a trojan/virus on your server.

I deleted the index.php.

First I looked at it. A long line of code was added at the end.

Definitely a trojan. Change all your FTP passwords, check all the PCs you have that connect to your site via FTP for viri.
