1. Install the popfetcher plugin
2. Configure the popfetcher plugin for your right POP-account data
3. Either always manually fetch new emails via the popfetcher menu item (enabled via configuration) or you create a cronjob to permanently call a special URL every X hours/days/minutes.
That special url is like:
http://yourblog/plugin/popfetcher_magicstring - the magicstring is also defined within configuration.
Just try it out

mail2s9y is too complicated for you, if you don't get it in first instance. Setting it up requires knowledge with your SMTP-MTA, so you're better off using popfetcher. In fact popfetcher is superior to mail2s9y in many ways, mail2s9y is outdated and not so advanced. The only advantage it has is that it immediately interfaces with the MTA and thus has no posting delay like a crontab or manually driven popfetcher.
Have fun and Regards,

I've been trying to get the output from the popfetcher plugin to look pretty and am not having much luck. It seems almost random where it decides to do linewrap. Are the same markup event plugins affecting the data posted via popfetcher?

Yes, the same markup event plugins affect the data from popfetcher.
Popfetcher in turn interprets the newslines you put into your mail. Some mailclients may do hard line wrapping after 70 characters, you should try to avoid this or disable the nl2br plugin?
