HTML META-Tags install?

Post by sfinsf »

I am new to s9y. I am trying to use the plugin "HTML META-Tags". I downloaded it and then uploaded the expanded directory to my "plugins" directory on my s9y site. I am not seeing it in the Configure Plugins page though. What am I doing wrong?

If I have the answer to this it may clear up the whole plugin knowledge gap I am having, not much beginners info out there on configuring these 3rd party soutions...

thanks!

Hi!

Are you sure you extracted it so that you now have /plugins/serendipity_event_metadesc/serendipity_event_metadesc.php ?

To add to what Garvin replied, make sure that each of your plugins is unzipped to its own folder.... the correct folder path should be in the zipfile if you downloaded it.

If your server permits it, you can also install the Spartacus plugin which will fetch and install plugins for you in the proper folders.

Yes, it's there. Maybe what I should ask is: where do I go to access the controls, what to do?

I'm going to the "Configure Plugins" link, but am not seeing anything. Is it accessed somewhere else in the admin, being a back end function?

From "Configure Plugins" you will see 2 parts. The upper part is the sidebar plugins. The lower portion are "event plugins". From Event Plugins, click on "Click here to install a new event plugin". If you are not using Spartacus, the plugins you see listed are all those already contained within your plugins folder and each will have an icon on the right that looks like this:

If you ARE using Spartacus, all plugins are shown, but those that you have not yet downloaded are shown with this icon:

The plugins are grouped by type, and listed alphabetically within each type. The HTML META-Tags is listed in the group Backend: meta information. You can filter the list of plugins to just this group to make it easier to find.

Once you have located it, click on the disc icon to install it. This will bring up a configuration screen with a few configuration items you can change. Save your changes, even if you change nothing.

Now, when you create an entry, or edit an existing entry, additional meta fields will be available for you to customize the meta details for each particular entry.

Thanks a lot for the info, Don. I have it installed now and it's pretty cool.

I should say here that while I like these plugins I think that the UI Serendipity has developed is pretty inscrutable. Or maybe the 3rd party developers need better documentation. I like the interface but I really didn't have a clue how it would work until I got generous help from the above postings.

Now that it's installed and I go to edit an existing post, I see the Html-META fields for entry.

Thanks again folks! :D

Happy to help. Yes, the documentation could use improvement. It has always lagged behind development.... it is difficult enough to find time to fix and improve functionality, and sadly, once a lot of energy has been spent on code, it is very easy to forget to update the documentation.

To be honest though, the documentation on using and installing plugins is not terribly out of date: http://www.s9y.org/45.html. I just tried to condense it a bit to your particular circumstance.
