RSS Feeds no longer work

Blog site: http://www.wandrin.us/blog

I don't subscribe to my own blog via any of the various readers, however many of my readers do. I received an email from one reader who said that the feeds no longer work.

Trying to do it on Yahoo, I get:
XML Parsing Error: syntax error
Location: http://www.wandrin.us/blog/index.php?/feeds/index.rss2
Line Number 1, Column 1:

Query failed: <pre>SELECT

Loading the blog address into my Google Reader, it recognizes the site. However, the most current entry seen was posted in July. (not correct)

What happened? What's an easy fix? Overlay modules? Which ones?

Using Serendipity 1.1.2

I believe there's a plugin that messes with the RSS output; maybe the Karma plugin. What event plugins do you have installed?

Interesting thought...

Just deleted two that had been added (don't know when in the recent past)
Properties/Templates of categories
Export blog as PDF

The only Event plugins remaining are:
Markup: Emoticate
Markup: Serendipity
Markup: NL2BR
Browser Compatability
Spam Protector
Spartacus

Very interesting...

Back to my blog to try to subscribe... Same result.

Then I went down the Syndicate This Blog sidebar and subscribed using RSS 1.0. That worked fine. The only other one that works is Atom 1.0. Changed the sidebar to only allow those two.

However, the URL subscribe icon still defaults to RSS2. Is there a way to get the URL address subscribe icon to point to RSS 1.0 instead of defaulting to RSS 2.0.

I believe it was the Properties/Templates of categories that was causing the RSS trouble.

When I load your RSS2 feed in Firefox 2.0, it comes up correctly. Perhaps you are using a cached version? Have you tried a different reader, like Google Reader?

judebert,

Thanks for the hint. But it becomes more confusing. The browser I use most is Firefox. It was probably a cached version. I "emptied" the Firefox cache and tried it again. Clicked on the RSS icon in the URL address line and Yahoo reports all the entries correctly.

Next attempt was to add to the Google Reader. This is a different process. To subscribe, paste the blog URL in the "add" slot. Result was that the current entry is listed and those between there and July 6th do not appear. Not sure what the problem is there.

Just to continue this effort, I tried the same "tests" as above on both Opera and Safari. Same results on both for Google Reader.

Most confusing. Since Google Reader still does not work correctly, I'm not sure what I should tell my readers. How about don't use Google Reader? Use Yahoo. I'm not familiar with any others.

Now my curiosity is tweaked to find out more about the process of RSS feeds and the many different options that are available. The RSS feed icon works differently on both Opera and Safari when compared to Firefox. (And I thought I left all this techie stuff behind when I retired.)

I just added your RSS2 feed to my Google Reader to test it out. It says you've got "More than 20 items", although only one is shown. When I use the "Next Item" button at the bottom of the screen, it shows me your older items.

I think the problem is that Google Reader -- and probably those other ones, too -- only show the last 10 items from the last time period, probably a month or so. Your next entry was from July 6, so it was too old to be included among the "New Entries".

But it looks like it's working, to me. See if those other readers were having trouble with the age of the second article in line.

Judebert,

Sounds like Google Reader did the same thing for you that it does for me. For some reason it doesn't see the many entries (way over 20) posted between July 6th and the current post on Sept 11.

There must be something in some of the wandrin.us/blog entries that Google Reader determines for some reason to ignore. The most entries that Google Reader sees from wandrin.us/blog is 65. There are way more than that.

For the other blogs that I do subscribe to, all of the posts are listed -- going back for way over 20 items. One of the more prolific blog authors writes every day. When I used Google Reader to see the items, I quit after the six month point -- over 180 items.

I checked the RSS 1.0 and Atom 1.0 readers. They do limit the entries shown, but the last fifteen are shown. There is no big gap between current and July 6th.

Time to check with the Google Reader team. Perhaps they can offer some tips.
