(I am likely missing something, but just can't find...)
Is it possible to get (in the sidebar) the list of the recent entries belonging to the same category as the entry just being displayed? Just something like Recent Entries plugin, but category-wise?
(Recent Entries allow one to specify the category, but it must be fixed)

In the sidebar plugin there should be the option "Parent category" ("current category"?) to choose from. Maybe it's only in s9y 1.4, but I thought it should also be in 1.3 already...

Yes, it is there in 1.3, I missed it.
But ... in case you can consider some updates, I feel it would be nice to have two further extensions here:
a) "toplevel parent category"
... so when I have an entry which belongs to category XXX_YYY which is a subcategory of XXX, I could show entries belonging to XXX, not to XXX_YYY
b) "negate this choice"
... so I could create two such sidebar blocks on the page - one with "related" entries (entries from the same category), and one
"also on this blog" (mentioning all entries not shown here)
