No categories, Board view only?

I had a request from users that the board would be too "complicated" using categories and that entries should be reached more quickly, without having to climb up a category/board tree first.
Can anyone help how I may switch off the categories in the code and implement the topics (not categories) directly into the front page?
Thanks!

Hi!
Excuse me, can you describe that a bit more? A frontpage of a s9y blog already lists entries in a flat mode, chronologically sorted - like usual for blogs.

sorry, sure - the users wanted to see the topic headlines at the front page (so the headline of each individual discussion).
In other words: They wanted it as if there would be no categories, only individual topics (it is a small, internal forum). Technically: As if there is only one category, but the content of it is shown directly at the front page. They log in and enter directly "inside the category". Saving one click.

Hi!
Are you sure you are talking about Serendipity?
Serendipity has no "discussions", it only has blog entries and related comments to that...so there is no "category view"! When you enter a s9y blog (like
http://blog.s9y.org/) you already see the latest entries, unrelated to categories.
