I've seen other messages relating to this, I've seen a reference to serendipity_entrycat (or something like that), but can't find out which directory it's in.

At http://transblawg.eu I have assigned multiple categories (only recent entries). When I click in the sidebar, nothing shows up under Fürth and under photos I get only a photo that had only one category.

Obviously I am not getting multiple entries to show. (They do if I click directly under the entry, not in the sidebar). But I can't find out where to change anything. I looked at the User Documentation and it refers to

I can't find this 'Manage Categories' anywhere. I presume I am in this Authoring Suite, or is that just something for developers?

Margaret - I think you are confusing "categories" with "tags". s9y includes a sidebar plugin for categories.... but an entry can only be assigned to a single category. To create/manage categories, go to the admin/backend and under the menu block titled "entries", simply click on "categories".

There is also a plugin called "tagging of entries", which you seem to be using. It is a single download, but you need to install it as both an event plugin and a sidebar plugin. Then you will have a sidebar item listing your tags.

You seem to have created 2 categories, and 2 tags using identical names. You have only assigned a single entry to the category "photos" and no entries use the category "fürth". By comparison, you have tagged 7 entries as with the tag "photos" and 5 entries with the tag "fürth".

Many people use both categories and tags... sometimes they are identical, sometimes not. Both categories and tags have their respective advantages.

I see. I know that some blogs have multiple categories and didn't realize that S9y had only one. I got the impression there are main categories and subcategories, so I couldn't imagine only one would be allowed. I thought what I was doing was adding categories, and that I might use a tag cloud later.

It is not much use to me if an entry can have only one category. So maybe I should just dump the categories and use tags? (I don't really feel the need to offer category feeds, particularly if I can't catch everything in the category because of overlapping).

There is a plugin that allows entries to be assigned to multiple categories, it's in the event categories list and its called 'category assignment'. It should be what you're looking for.

I've got that plugin already - that's why I said I am getting no results on multiple categories (I accidentally wrote 'multiple entries'). But presumably I haven't correctly identified the plugin. I actually thought I was using it, hence my question. I will have a look.

Categories can have "subcategories" as well. For instance, you could have a parent category "photos", and subcategories like "wildlife", "architecture", and "portraits".

Now I see what it is - I didn't understand how the plugin worked. I have to click on a + sign to get the second category. I thought I had to enter my categories as tags below.
