URGENT: Upgraded and Now Won't Save Categories

Bug? I blame me.
Just upgraded from 1.2-alpha to 1.2 and Serendipity won't save categories.
First... my standard upgrade procedure. I upgrade all but the plugins folder, the uploads folder and the template I'm using. Did.
Other Symptoms: Categories in admin show all the categories. When you open an individual category, a "<" appears for name, description and image.
What did I mess up? Fixable or back peddle back to 1.2-alpha?
Thanks much.
Brian

Hi!
You only updated plugins and templates, but what about the core files? Seems you forgot to upload the s9y core files, and thus s9y couldn't update your database layer.
When upgrading, always upload ALL FILES OF THE RELEASE. Just like the FAQ mentions in detail.

)
Look at the FAQ on how to fixup your install by redoing the update.

Garvin

What files are you talking about specifically?
What FAQ?
Can I fix what I've got?

I am just going to resetup my last working installation (and think about upgrading again.)
What core files are you referring to?

Is there a folder you have in mind?

Hi!
No specific folder, just all that are in the s9y release file.

No. Not practical. Too many modifications in plugins. Too many plugins in the release I do not use.
Okay... let's start over. I'm trying to install the LITE version. Here's what I'm doing:
1. On the existing install (1.2-alpha), I delete bundled libs, htmlarea, include, lang.
2. on the LITE staging area (folder), I replace the plugins, uploads with that of 1.2_alpha. I then add the template I am using (maintain the new default and carl templates).
3. I remove the serendipity files at /public_html root to be replaced by the new files in the staging folder.
REINSTALL.
right?
That should all of it. Are there any files in the newer plugin folder that are required?

Hi!

Then you need to create a list of your customizations. In serendipity you should NEVER need to modify core files. You can always create your own template or plugin file, so that this will not be overwritten on an update. You should really do that.
1. On the existing install (1.2-alpha), I delete bundled libs, htmlarea, include, lang.
That's not good already. NEVER DELETE FILES on the original install. Please, read through the FAQ on how an update should be performed.

Did exactly what you said Garvin. Uploaded LITE over existing. Says it upgraded to 1.2. However, the category issue is replicated.

PS This is really fun. I've just stapled my hand to my desk and put a pencil about 4'' into my left ear. I am wondering if I jab a pen up my nose if that will add to the overall experience.
UPDATE: YES... The pen up my nose was excruciatingly helpful.

Hi!
And you did modify serendipity_config_local.inc.php to be set to your previous s9y version, like outlined in the FAQ? To which earlier version did you set the versionInstalled variable exactly?
UPDATE: YES... The pen up my nose was excruciatingly helpful.
Send pics.

FWIW I had the same issue upgrading my blog from s9y 1.14 to 1.2.
I've "solved" it by restoring the whole HTML backup I've created luckily before upgrading.
It may have been caused by beeing logged in(?) while upgrading or just surfing to/on the serendipity_admin.php while upgrading.
I've repeated the upgrade in the night/early morning then and made sure at least I'm not surfing on the site while upgrading. This time, the upgrade worked.
Bye,
