Yes, I set up /serendipity/uploads/images for my images. I can upload no problems using the media manager and it creates the thumbs also in that directory.
Here's a few screen grabs which might help:

The second screenshot shows an error relating to a wrong database version. Did you upgrade to 1.2 or did you do a fresh install?

It was an upgrade.

Hi!
Sadly you didn't properly perform the upgrade. Did you follow the steps mentioined in the FAQ? You are missing a database upgrade.
Please redo the upgrade like outlined in the FAQ.

Hiya,
The upgrade appeared to go smoothly, with no errors and everything marked as writeable that should have been.
/sigh
Is it a big issue? If not I'll probably just leave it as is

Hi!
IT is a big issue! You are missing database columns that are required for porpoer operation.
Did you see the upgrader when you upgraded ?Did it tell you that it will execute some SQL statements? And did you tell the installer to go ahead with these? any error messages on the following screen?
Make sure your SQL user has privileges to execute "ALTER TABLE" statements.

Hi!
The mediadatabase upgrade for the realname column happened much earlier then the verison you backgraded, it seems.
The realname column was introduced somewhere in serendipity 1.1, so you might need to browse through the sql/db_update*.sql files to check if those listed columns exist.
You might need to backdate your version to serendipity 1.0 (like the FAQ mentions) and then all other DB updates can be re-executed. Already existing columns will not be readded, so there shouldn't be any problem with that.

Hi!
Okay, that screen looks good. Now you no longer get that SQL error in the media database, right?

Result! Thank you.
I had to re-create my images directory for some reason and re-upload through media manager to get them to show but all is now good.
Now, that just leaves the small problem of the 'Add image from mediadatabase' button not working on tinyMCE
I'm still getting the 'You have to be logged in to view this page' message

Hi!
Could it be that you login to a different URL than the one that opens the media selector? If you are logged in to
www.example.com, you are not automatically logged on to example.com!

Good thinking there batman!
You are right, when I click to add from the media button the address is:
http://crookedabstraction.com
Whereas I log into:
www.crookedabstraction.com
So I changed it in the config and now all is good!
Have a sweetie on me
