Thanks-- that solved the problem!

I've finally gotten the blog to the point that I'm comfortable making it the index page for my site:

www.afc-north.com/index.php

Feel free to take a look, and let me know if there's anything glaringly obvious I need to fix.

I'm afraid I have created myself another problem, though. The most recent thing I did was to change my password. I was careful as I typed the new one, but now the admin login page doesn't seem to be accepting either my old or my new password.

I don't know if this is because of something I overlooked about moving the blog (basically, I took /serendipity/ out of the URLs in the "Paths" section under "Configuration," then I used FTP to move everything that was in the /serendipity/ folder down to the base directory of the site).

In searching this board, I also found reference to a problem with Firefox 3.0 (which is what I was using) filling in incorrect passwords, but I had thought that was the password for the database, not my login password as a user.

Does anyone know what might have caused this problem? Clearly I need to solve this before I can update again!

With some more searching, I figured out how to use phpAdmin to change my user password in the database itself. It's working now, so most likely I wasn't as careful as I thought I was when I typed it in the first time.

Lookin good! One thing you might want to consider over time is changing some of your html pages to static pages.... especially with some of the new static page functionality coming in 1.4.

Yeah; I think that would be a good idea. My head's full of ideas about how to use the static page feature-- I think this is really going to be fun!

Well, so far I'm finding it a lot easier and more fun to keep the site updated. No commenters yet, but that's probably because it had been a while since the front page to my site had been updated.

Anyway, I have a question about how to handle a specific type of post on my site-- the game post. The idea is to have a post about each team's football game for the week so that people can post their thoughts while the game is going on or shortly after.

But I also want the game posts to become permanent records of what happened in the game, so that people can go back and read about a team's games, and once again add their thoughts by posting comments if they wish. (During the offseason, I might add some summaries of historical games from decades ago too.)

The issue is how to handle the switch from "upcoming game" mode to "past game" mode. I can think of a few ways to handle this:

-- One is to go back and edit my post after the game is over, changing it so that it talks about what happened in the game in past tense. That's what I did for the three "Week 16" game posts. I don't know if I like this system, though, because it means I'm erasing what I wrote before, and it kind of obligates me to go back and alter every game post as soon as possible after the game is over, and I'm not sure I want to do that for every single game.

-- Another option is to make two posts for each game, one before and one after. I think that would tend to clutter up the blog a bit much, especially when I'm not getting comments yet.

-- I think what might work best would be to make the game posts before the game, so that people can discuss it if they want, and then once I write a summary (whether that's right after the game or weeks later) to make the summary a static page that I add a link to within the game post. (This would work as long as people can also make comments to static pages.)

Is this something that it makes sense to try? If so, would I want to make the static post an "Article," an "Overview," or a "Staticpage with related category"? I am still trying to get a grasp of what static pages are for, and I'm not sure if I'm on the right track. Are they even meant to be linked to from within posts, or are the links to them supposed to be shown in the sidebar?

Thanks for your continued help-- sorry this post is so long. I can start a new thread if this represents too big of a change in topic.

You cannot make comments to static pages if that helps with your decision making. Static pages can be associated with a particular category though. One use of this might be to have a static page with general info for a particular team (or division, etc), then have the static page list recent entries for the category it is associated with.... I have never tried this functionality though, so I am not entirely sure what capabilities exist when a static page is associated with a particular category.

There is nothing wrong with editing a post after it was originally created.. however, you really should not change the title as this also changes the permalink to that entry. Revisions should, IMHO, be along the lines of corrections or supplemental information, not a complete re-write.

Perhaps you could create some kind of reusable vocabulary, such as "Pre-game: Entry title" and "Post-Game: Entry title", where "entry title" might be identical for the game, or subtly revised to also reveal outcome.

Each post would then permit comments, and using tags, you could show the related entries in the footer of each entry.

Ultimately, there is often no single "correct" way to achieve your objective. Sometimes you need to play around with different features/options/concepts before arriving at what works best for YOU.
