Ok, I see Garvin said on the topic, "If you already have content in your godaddy install, you should try to make a database dump before!"

I'm very new to weblog software so forgive me if this sounds naive, but how do I do a database dump?

Export entries?

I did that and got a page of everything and bookmarked that page.

Or do I do something else?

No, you're not - you're using 0.8.2, you can't be new

I think what Garvin meant by that is a MySQL dump. You can't do that from Serendipity, you need something like phpmyadmin or whatever tool your webspace provider, erm, provides for this task.

We really need to find some way of getting GoDaddy to update their script. We're getting a lot more GoDaddy users these days and it won't be long till upgrading from 0.82 to 1.1 is just too difficult. Buzz, would you mind letting the GoDaddy tech support people know, or maybe ask them for a contact name so one of us can get the ball rolling?

I certainly will tell them to update it. It all makes sense now why I'm so out of date.

I'm figuring out how to do a MySQL Database backup with them right now. Wish me luck. Hehheh.

Nice try, but no. I think that's only for attempts to import into other blogging systems.

To make a database dump, you open phpMyAdmin. You login to your database. You go to the wonderful "Database Backup/Restore" tab. You hit the button -- you can also set some options, if you like -- and you wait it to start a download. The downloaded file will be your database dump. You can use it later in a restore if everything goes wrong somehow.

EDIT: Late to the party, as usual. If only I didn't have to work.

Grrrr. Seems my Serendipity database files are not a MySQL thing. That of which I know nothing about.

Ever hear of paFileDB ?

No, I'm afraid I haven't heard of it. But the database dumps are all SQL, so they're compatible across databases.

Never heard of it, but a quick google shows its homepage is at phparena.net and a demo seems available, but I can't make head or tail of it. Might have to get GoDaddy tech support to help you with the backup

Ok. This one says I can do what you've told me to do so I'll give it a try. I do have my entries backed up elsewhere so if all else fails, I can always reinsert them manually. That's how they all got there in the first place.

Buzz, stop with the apologies, if we're able to help we will, believe me we would all prefer to see your site working now rather than have you wait another day or so. Problem is that we're all in different timezones, so if we're all online right now, you can bet its going to another 24hours until we're all back online again at the same time. The paFileDB thing seems to offer no option to do backups.

I did download the phpmyadmin but once it unzipped, I couldn't find a install or setup file. Just a bunch of files. No clue what to do with that. Hmmm.

I'm all for using stable software, but these guys have definitely gotten something wrong

Just to get this straight: These guys offer a blog hosting service with a more than rusty version of s9y, they refuse to upgrade it, but users can upgrade themselves? Weird people.
