Hi!

It depends on your hoster setup, if they run a chroot for your website, they can isoloate the user. But 99% of hosts have one central user for ALL php applications, thus not having a possibility to sort out an application. PHP does not run on "per application" basis, so there is no "serendipity user".

I am quite certain that your provider will not allow Spartacus to work. It conflicts with their interests of not giving you access and maintaining the application for you. They could not do that, if you were able to install custom code on it. For that, you need to host the application yourself via a standalone-installation - this is not very hard to manage; once installed, you can upgrade serendipity by simply uploading the new files, no more.

Garvin

Hi,

I am in exactly the same situation as JohnnyWhy with my provider 1and1.com. I installed Serendipity as a 1click application, but when I try to use Spartacus I run into the permissions problem. The advice from 1and1 is to install Serendipity myself. I'm a programmer, so technically I could do it, although my area is low level embedded real-time, so I have very little experience with Web technology and services and don't want to spend tons of time getting everything sorted.

JohnnyWhy- Did you manage to get Serendipity/Spartacus working hosted on 1and1? How time consuming was it?

Thanks,

Tom

poncho, i'm a programmer too, but i didn't want to devote a lot of time to programming and maintaining serendipity. unfortunately, i could not get 1and1 to enable Spartacus. maybe you would have more luck!

What did you end up doing? Giving up on using Serendipity? Use a different blogger software? Use Serendipity without Spartacus?
