"Global" double-opt in?

Yesterday, someone asked me whether I could switch the double-opt in to work "globally", i.e. not seperately for every single entry. Almost never using comment subscription myself, I didn't know whether it was even possible, but I don't think it currently is. However, I think it would be nice to have, at least as an option.

Or is there some kind of legal reason why this needs to be renewed for every entry?

There isn't even a clear legal reason to have it at all. +1 for the global opt-in.

I thought the whole point was to make sure the email address supplied actually belongs to the person providing it. Otherwise, for instance, I could enter garvin's email address on all kinds of blogs, then he gets a ton of comment notifications he did not request.

Global sounds like a good idea on one hand, but completely defeats the purpose of opt-in after the first opt-in confirmation... maybe the feature (as confirmed by the commenter, not the admin) should be No/This post only/global?

Hm, Don has a point on this. You could re-use mail adresses on a blog for people that often comment there. So maybe a new option would need to be created, that can be chosen by blog owners? Dunno...?!

Hm, this is also fairly complicated since people should be able to revoke their comment subscriptions individually. And since there is -- as far as I know -- currently no "interface" to "manage" these (neither for the user nor the admin), it could get pretty complicated anyway.

So confirmation subcription should always have these options:

- subscribe to comments for a particular entry
- subscribe to all comments on the blog
- cancel subscriptions for a particular entry
- cancel subscriptions globally

(Why the hell don't people just use the comments RSS feeds anyway? Grrr.)

Having all the option in a subscription sounds like a good idea. But isn't it weird to have to subscribe again and get such a email although you already subscribed globally? Maybe something like a subscribe-manager is really needed.

I don't think that the misuse-probability is high, not only would you have to know on which blog the one you want to spam commented, you also would've to know the used email-adress.

I agree with Onli in that I also think the probability of abuse is low.

However, lets not confuse subscribing with double opt-in. Isn't the question whether we have an option that lets someone basically respond "yes, I wanted to receive comment notifications at this email address" and "next time I say I want comment notifications, do not ask me to confirm it"....

In addition to the above, we probably should have subscription cancellations of:

a) cancel subscriptions for this entry/post.
b) cancel subscriptions for all entries.

I dunno - maybe we are over thinking this!

Suggestion: Let's have a formular where you enter your email-adress in. There you see your subscriptions, being able to cancel them, and a checkbock with "I don't want to confirm my subscriptions per mail", which you can uncheck or check. On a subscription mail, there are two links to confirm: confirm once and confirm for all (which will, apart from confirming the subscription, toogle the same option as the checkbox).
