I tried to search for this: easy way to add images to a post

Post by brownrd »

I have some pretty inexperienced users who will be updating a Serendipity blog on our site, and basically, I need a way to add images to a blog post without having to think about it too much.

We have used Blogger in the past, and it lets you browse for images no matter where they are - they could even be on your own computer. It appears that in Serendipity you have to first upload them, then when posting you first have to acccess your media library, and get the path to the images... see, this is too much for my users.

I searched for a plug-in and am not having any success. It's probably as plain as the nose on my face - any suggestions?

It's true that you have to upload your images first. However, if you use the "Add Media" menu item, you can directly upload a file on your computer to the Media Library. Then you can use the "Media" button while you write your entries to browse the Media Library and pick the picture you want -- no paths required.

However, that doesn't mean you can't use paths! The Media Library supports a directory structure, so you can sort your pictures into folders and access them more easily later.

The "Add Media" menu item will also allow you to download pictures from another website, if your hosting service will allow it to connect. Just specify the image's URL instead of using the "Browse" button.

I like the idea of inserting images from anywhere. Maybe we can implement it sometime. Meanwhile, the Media Library makes using images a two-step process: Add Media, then select the media.

If you or your users need any help with it, we'll be here.

I did that, and when I get the Media Library, I see thumbnails, and I was assuming that I could click on a thumbnail and select it for use in the post, but mine doesn't work that way. When I point my mouse at a thumbnail, nothing happens. Am I not doing it the right way? By the way, I am using the "MT-Clean" template, if that maes any difference.

Which s9y version are you using? Do you have the WYSIWYG editor enabled? Which browser do you use? Do you have javascript activated?

S9Y version is 1.2.1, WYSIWYG is enabled, and javascript is enabled.

I double checked, and I can access the media library, but cannot select anything from there. When I mouse over a thumbnail, nothing happens. I use Godaddy, and s9y was installed by them

Hi!

Which browser do you use? Have you check the javascript error console?

This can sometimes happen if you use a different domain to access your blog than the one you configured, like if you use http://yourdomain.com to enter the blog, but you configured http://WWW.yourdomain.com in serendipity.

I use IE 7. I also tried it in Firefox 2.0.0.3 and it doesn't work there, either. In the media library I do get the icons to the left of the thumbnail - view, resize, edit, etc - I just don't see a way to select one for posting. As to accessing it from a different domain, per your advice, I also tried accessing from it's absolute URL rather than it's subdomain, and it still doesn't work.

Javascript error console? :?:

Hi!

Did you also check the console after you click on an image in the media popup where you see the thumbnails? Clicking there should provoke an error message.

If you still see no errors, I don't know what's happening for you - I would need to check this on your actual site with my browser. Send me a PM if I should check it. It might take me til monday though, I'm now off for the weekend.

Garvin

Hi!

What I meant was that I would need to get an author account to your blog, otherwise I can't see the media integration setup ::)

Anyways, you are acessing your admin suite through http://aisquith.org/restoration/serendipity_admin.php, right? Do not access it via http://WWW.aisquith.org/restoration/ because that is not the URL you configured.
