HTML META - Tags Plugin updated.

Post by Don Chambers »

This plugin has been updated to improve search results. The concept originated from this discussion: http://board.s9y.org/viewtopic.php?t=11399

Thanks a bunch to Doug from http://www.SiteOptimized.com for originally posing the question, to Garvin for developing the original plugin, to YellowLed for a German language translation, to Carl for testing... and... a HUGE thanks to Judebert for technical expertise above and beyond!!!

I have written up a description of this plugin on my new site here: http://www.optional-necessity.com/archi ... tails.html

I suppose this message also serves as an announcement of that new site, so I hope you will visit/bookmark/feed the site!!!!!!

This is a plugin ALL s9y users, and their visitors, will benefit from, so be sure to check it out!!!

Re-reading my post above, I realize I forgot to mention the key points of the modifications to this plugin update:

  • New:
Added field for entry-specific <title> element.
Added word and character counts to all fields.
Added defaults for meta description and meta keywords on non-single entry pages.
Added fallback to default meta keywords if a keyword phrase cannot be generated based upon the list of HTML Tags for keywords.

    Updated:
Increased meta data field display widths.
Added suggestions for length of all fields.
Increased auto-generated entry meta description to 120 characters.

This might mean a lot of extra work, but is there any chance this plugin and the static pages plugin can work together?

The thought of static pages had already crossed my mind. I'm not sure if this plugin is the place to provide that functionality, or if it is better placed directly in the static page plugin.

Perhaps Garvin will share his opinion.

Sine I already have both plugins installed I don't really mind which one actually does the work, but upgrading the static pages plugin makes sense.

Erm, I installed this this morning ... I think the German lang file has the wrong encoding. Not sure how this is handled with plugins, so I'm not sure whether it's UTF-8 and should be ISO-8859-1 or vice versa ..? But I definitely don't see German umlauts in the plugin's configuration screen.

My editor does not do a very good job of utf-8 encoding. I sent the zipfile to Garvin for him to commit to cvs and asked that he check the utf-8 encoding of the language files.... perhaps that got overlooked.

Hi!

German lang fixe.d I only checked the UTf-8 language file, which was okay. But the core lang file was not in ISO-format :)

I thought I might try this plugin for individual entries. I am not interested in blog-wide titles or keywords.

The first screen that comes up has 'b, strong' suggested as entries. I deleted them and saved, but still they come up on the screen. Are they deleted and just shown as a help for the user, or are they non-deletable?

b and strong are the default values for that field.....

In this entry on my site I described how this works:
HTML Tags for keywords: The html tags you provide here will help the plugin generate automated keywords for every entry for which you do not provide an entry-specific keyword phrase. The default is the bold and strong tags, but you can populate this field with whatever HTML tags you desire. Note the leading "<" and trailing ">" characters are omitted from the tag list. The plugin will search the entry body (NOT the extended body) looking for these HTML tags, and if it finds them, the text enclosed within those tags will be used to generate meta keywords. If the auto-generation of an entry keyword results in a blank value (ie, nothing in the entry was enclosed within the specified tags), the plugin will use the "HTML default meta keywords" value discussed below, provided it too is not blank. If both evaluate to blank, no meta keyword phrase will be emitted.
If a blank value WAS allowed to be saved, the default behavior would definitely never find anything from which to provide meta keywords for entries that you have not provided an entry-specific list of keywords.

Thanks - yes, I understood that. What I don't understand is how I put an html tag that results in a blank value. I suppose I must look at some html and choose a tag I never use.

Hi!

The thing is that simply s9y doesn'T accept empty values. An empty value always resets back to the default.

Simply use "thisisnotavalidtag" instead ;)

Thanks, Garvin. I might do that. Or just remove the plugin. Maybe if I only want it for individual entries, it isn't doing me any good anyway.

I would not waste too much energy on what s9y is trying to generate for keywords anyway. Not much value, if any, in search engine results. The power of the plugin is being able to provide title element, and description for specific entries (or description for the entire site).... those ARE relevant to search engines.
