Serendipity blog provided by my Net Host.

Post by Preeminent »

Hello All,
I am just curious about how limited my options are as far as installing plugins and making changes to the overall appearance of my blog. My website is hosted by 1and1.org and they offer serendipity as part of their hosting plan. I have begun and test blog on a subdomain of my personal website. I was wanting to install a few different plugins, but most of them(google adsense plugin just to name one) will not work for me when I click on the "install now" button. Spartacus is installed. I have physically downloaded a few of the desired plugins to my computer, but I do not know what to do with those files now-if it is even possible to do anything at all with them, since this is through my hosting company.

I hope I didn't confuse anyone. Thanks in advance for any replies!

First suggestion: move away from 1and1. They are one of the worst over sellers of web space around. This is just a suggestion that I tell anyone who uses them for hosting. I would be happy to explain the issues I've seen with this host if you (or anyone else) wants to know.

My next suggestion is to not use any of the scripts that are provided by a web host. Yes it makes them evermly easy to use, but they are almost never up to date You are also limited to what you can do with the script.

Now to actually answer your questions: With sparticus it downloads the plugins to the server, nothing else is needed. S9Y is one of the easiest platforms to install plugins on. Simple hit "Click here to install a new event plugin" in the plugin section of the admin panel and it will allow you to install a new plugin. No download needed. It is really that easy.

ah man! I just switched to them because they were offering a good price and ALOT of extras along with the hosting-at least compared to my old host.

Ok, so I guess I could just download the serendipity blog software and personally upload it to my server. But then I run into the problems with the coding and scripts that I am really not good with. Ill have to start reading up on the FAQs and the forum. Thanks for the reply.

Preeminent,
I used 1and1 and switched to Dotster. I love the Serendipity blog, but there are a few things I cannot get to work (like downloading plugins with Sparacus and the spam for comments has been awful), but Dotster seems ok - they came highly recommended.

If you could get me the SSH information to login I would be more than happy to get the basic site setup for you.

With SSH the install process takes less than 10 minutes if you know how to run Linux from the command line.

Back to hosting --

I've come across many people who've been locked out of 1and1 due to a "large" load on the server. Most of these people were running wordpress and not s9y, but if you expect to get much traffic I would expect the same thing.

With hosting you get what you pay for in most cases. Of course there are hosts that are overpriced rackspace for example, but paying a tiny price you will probably find issues.

With cheap hosting I would keep at a ton of backups locally. That way if they kick you off the server you can easily move elsewhere. Heck, I do that with my $50/mo hosting plans. More backups the better.
