trackbacks do not even work within my blog

Post by saxycb »

hello!

trackbacks do not seem to work in my blog.

i tried to reference from one article to another in my blog by just entering the URL to the html-page of the second article. but when saving the article i reveiv the message that no trackback-uri could be found. that's pretty weird since i know that such an uri must exist within serendipity.

i also installed the trackback-control-plugin and allow trackbacks to my own blog. it does not work either.
when i put the same url-reference into the "control"-section, i get the message that my article is saved. but no trackback appears at the original article.
if i put the trackback-uri in the control-section that i get the message that the trackback is sent - but it does not seem to arrive there... trackbacks are still zero.

now i don't know what more i can try out to get it working.

hop you can help me out!

cheers

Link to example?

Are you using the link to the entry, which would probably end in .html, or is it something like &entryid=#?

Hi,

here is a link to my (second-)test-entry:
http://www.univie.ac.at/ebusiness/php/b ... -test.html

I put a link to another test-entry:
http://www.univie.ac.at/ebusiness/php/b ... -test.html

So - as you can see, I use the html-URL.

Interestingly I could observe the following:
Blog entries will be readable for co-authors only. In order that you can have a look on my test-entries I changed that to "readable for everyone".
When I edited the article with the reference (I just inserted the same reference a second time), I receive the message that the trackback had been sent successfully!!
However, the original article did not receive any entries...

So the first question that arises: does trackback only work if articles are readable by everyone?
Second question: Could it be that a firewall on the server prevents from receiving trackbacks? I already posed this question to my hoster. But they answered with another bulk of questions: "What ports (TCP/UCP) and which protocols (SMTP,...) are used for communication?"
Well, I'm too much a newbie as I'd be able to answer these...

Could you have a look on that? I'd be grateful.

Cheers

A trackback is a type of comment. Is it pending and needs to be approved?

wow - now i got it working. not exactly as i wish it to work. but at least it does.

i did not allow "comments" for the articles. so that's why trackback did not work.
thanks for the hint!

i'd prefer if the form for a comment (with url to a website and e-mail address and so on) would not be shown on the blog. that's why i disabled comments. I'm sure some of the users will use this comment form and will wonder afterwards why the comment does not show up as an article in a blog.

anyways - it does only work if the original article (which is referred to) is readable to everyone instead of only for co-authors.
do you have another hint for that?

cheers

The comment form is not shown if an entry does not allow comments.... if comments are allowed for a given entry, they are shown after the entry on the detailed entry page (ie, the entry itself has been "clicked").

As far as trackbacks not working when entries are not public, this is consistent with the whole nature of that kind of entry.... you would not want a link from a public entry to a "private" entry.
