Changing host and domain

Post by shanex »

Hi,

I am a novice at Serendipity, and I am trying to switch hosts, from Aplus.net to Bluehost. My site is currently www.microcapital.org on Aplus, but I am going to a new domain on Bluehost. Should I just install Serendipity in Bluehost and then transfer the files from Aplus.net over? If so, what files should I transfer?

Thanks

These are the steps you need to follow;

1. install serendipity on your new host
2. copy your uploads folder (if you have any images on your blog)
3. if you've created a custom template, then also copy the folder for that over to the templates folder at your new host
4. open phpmyadmin in your old host, and export your database
5. open phpmyadmin at your new host, and import the database

That should be all you need to do.

Hi!

Added to what carl said, please also read the FAQ on www.s9y.org.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

One wrinkle in what I am trying to do is that, in term of pages, I am only looking to transfer over the archive posts and not the main page.

i.e. I have a new blog set up under my new domain name at Bluehost, and I want to keep that. I would like to transfer over all my old entries under Serendipity (plus uploaded image files, etc).

Is there any way I can do this?

Thanks

Do exactly what Carl said. This is tranferring your existing installation from one host to another.

Thanks Carl and azel. I am getting a better understanding of how everything works now, and I've uploaded all the necessary Serendipity files onto my new host. However, before I proceed with the actual installation, I need to be very certain of something. At my new BlueHost host, I already have a blog at www.microcapitalmonitor.com set up using Wordpress. When I install Serendipity at this domain, I need to absolutely sure that my new Serendipity setup will not wipe out my Wordpress one (as I am only looking to host the Serendipity archives). Can someone explain whether this will happen, and if not, why?

Thanks again

Hi shane!

That won't work! You can't "copy" the serendipity archives without putting the whole s9y installation on a new server. More specifically, you can NOT put serendipity into the same directory like WP. Both systems would erase themselve out.

Serendipity serves archives dynamically, which is why you need a working install on a target server.
