can i apply my apache configurations in the htaccess file

I was instructed by my site host to "Please apply your apache configurations into file /var/www/html/.htaccess file instead."

would doing this prevent me from setting up a shared installation?

If not would i have to do anything differently ?

Basically it should work with using the .htaccess file. But only if your host is allowing AllowOverride ALL and allows to set php_value_* inside your .htaccess.
