same issue
i got godaddy, too same issue, chmod .htaccess to 777 and the s9y directory to 777 as well. still getting "need to write .htaccess" message on install. the funny thing is just now the google ad on this forum page is for godaddy. anyone else have this working on godaddy sites?

If possible please talk to your GoDaddy.com support. To me it seems as if the directories do not match 777 or a ownership conflict consists, or PHPs SafeMode is enabled.
