frustrated newbie with strange issue

Post by n2ition »

I recently set up s9y version 0.7.1 to be sure that I could get it up and running. I was thrilled with it but did notice that several of the plugins I needed only worked on 0.8 versions. This evening I upgraded to 0.8.4b and now am getting complaints from friends & family that the photos are showing as broken links (red x in box). The very strange thing is that when I view the site is looks completely normal (pictures show fine.) Even worse when I was trying to investigate the strange behavion I logged into the backend and tried to view full size images from the media library. The thumbnails are showing just fine but I keep getting the error message below for every full size image I try to view.

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /serendipity/uploads/Sunroom/sunroomFixture.jpg on this server.

My permissions on my uploads folder is 777 and each subfolder (category)is set to 755.

I am new to blogs and was moving along pretty well until I upgraded. Have I totally screwed myself? Do I need to reinstall 0.7.1?

HELP

I don't think you need to reinstall. But something is not set to 755 in your uploads folder. Check the files as well, not only the folders?

It definitely is an issue with your webserver/file permission setup...

I use file manager in cpanel to set permissions. The uploads folder is set to 775 and will not respond to request to set to 755. Furthermore the images are set to 666 for the thumbnails and 664 for the images themselves and they will not respond to the permission change via cpanel either. If I try to ftp through my browser to set permissions I get a 550 error stating "could not change perm" and "bad file decriptor".

I should let you know that this is the second complete installation I have done. Since I only had a few posts and had them in word document anyway I just did a clean install of 0.8.4 instead of trying to stay with the one that had upgraded from 0.7.1. I used a new database and there was no overlap in any files. Which means that this is new since my previous post.

Also, I am having a problem with the media directories not being allowed to be deleted. I finally found a post of someone with a similar issue last September and used a script they wrote to delete it (my PHP knowledge is very slight so I didn't want to run the risk tinkering with something I don't know about) but I thought you might want to be aware that this issue is still valid.

Hm, this then seems to be an unlucky installation of your webserver and PHP process privileges. Please talk to your administrators and ask them to change ownership/permissions of Apache/PHP/FTP so that each can read from another.

Your webserver user should always be able to read any files of your homedirectory, and your FTP user should always be able to read any files of your homedirectory.

This issue keeps getting stranger. I deleted the original "upload" folder on the server and created a new one and that seemed to resolve my issues of not being able to set permissions. I then was able to upload all my photos and I could see them just fine. However I was getting complaints from friends & family that they could see the blog entries but all images (including those outside the upload folder) were coming up as broken links. I sent a message to my host to see if there is a hiccup on their end but anyone reading this post gets some time could someone check and see if images are showing ok now. This entire time the only time I haven't seen the images is when I try to view fullsize through media manager. This morning issue seems resolved but I don't know if it's just that one or if all images are viewable.

Thanks!

I can view all your images and fullsize links, at least that image on the frontpage and the large version in this entry: http://www.n2ition.com/serendipity/inde ... l#extended

BTW: Great nifty house. I'm envious! :-D

I love the house too...but it's lots of work so my time spent trouble shooting my blog is greatly limited.

Thanks for all your help! :)
