Installing the Weblog Ping Event Plugin

Post by cam2sex »

Hi there,

I want to install the weblog Ping Event Plugin in Serendipity but I have not yet found it in the list of Event plugins.

Has anyone installed this plugin and if so where did you get it from?

If this plugin is not available, is there another third party Ping plugin compatible with Serendipity?

Thanks in advance for any relevant posts

Cheers

Hi

the event plugin you're looking for is 'announce entries'. If you've enabled the Spartacus plugin you should eb able to download it from configure plugins in your blog admin.

Hi Dave,

thank you for your post and instructions, much appreciated.

I successfully installed the 'Announce entries', thank you. Do I setup specific blog sites to be PINGED?

Do I have to complete the Custom ping-services field? If so, I need to setup serendipity to automatically PING http://www.topblogging.com
How would I enter the data using the format like: "host.domain/path"?

Thanks in advance

Hi Chris!

You can configure the announce entries plugin through the plugin configuration, and there you enable which sites you usually want to ping.

When you write a new entry, at the bottom of it you see a checkbox for every available service where you want to send a ping to when publishing an entry.

You can use custom ping services as well, and need to enter their full URL, like "www.topblogging.com/yourservice/ping". ("host/path")

Dear Garvin,

thank you for your response.

Yes, I understood the custom ping services but still not sure of how to obtain the full URL for each blog site?

What does the '/yourservice/' part of the url path in "www.topblogging.com/yourservice/ping" relate to?

Thank you in advance

Kind regards

Hi!

I don't know this topblogging.com. It needs to support XMLRPC pings, I could not find that on their site!

Pings are only possible using this XMLRPC method, so the service needs to support that. The listed services in the plugin are services that support this.

Hi Garvin,

so for my example, the full path to ping topblogging.com will be something like this: www.topblogging.com/xmlrp/ping, correct?

Kind regards

Hi!

If Topblogging.com offers the XMLRPC service under that url, yes. But when I call this URL in my browser, it does not look as if a XMLRPC listener is active there.

Are you sure that topblogging.com offers XMLRPC pings? It seems they only support manuall pinging through their webform?

Usually any provider that offers XMLRPC inform you about this, like Technorati does here:

http://technorati.com/ping

Hi again,

ok so for Technorati the full path is http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping

for topblogging they may use http://rpc.topblogging/rpc/ping but this not a guarantee of course, correct?

they may use http://www.topblogging/rpc/ping or soemthing else right?

Thanks in advance

Hi!

Exactly! You need to ask Topblogging.com where they run their RPC service. You cannot guess it.

Once you have the URL, you use that to enter into the weblogping plugin but strip the 'http://' in front of it.

Ok thanks Garvin, it now makes sense for me.

I will be busy contacting all of the blog directories requesting the path to their RPC service. :o

Kind regards

Hi!

I bet many of those won't have RPC services, because automatted submission defies the main income of those services. They also earn money when you simply visit their page to add a manual ping to your site! So it's in their interest to NOT have a RPC-service for you.

So I think on all pages where you don't see a link to the RPC-service, chances are that they don't offer one. But good luck with contacting the people!!

Best regards,
Garvin

Hi Garvin,

understood, too good to be true and like you say, it will probably be only a select few blog directories that will offer their RPC service.

I will see if the services listed in the plugin accept sex blogs (Yahoo etc). I know technorati accepted us, but not sure about the others?

Kind regards

Chris
