Categories and Static pages

Post by JWalker »

Hi,

This is an idea (I think it is not implemented). What about to have a static page associated to each category? By now there is no any connection between the static pages and the categories. This is alright. I mean something else. When creating a category, to have option to create a static page, that will contain general information about the category or whatever the user wants. Then, in the sidebar, next to the category name, an icon/link may exist that will lead to this static page. This is the harder way.

The easy way is to provide a link to a static page (from the staticpage plugin). This link will be given when the category is created, or at later stage when editing the category data. The link will be shown at the sidebar as above. The drawback here is that the static page plugin is not part of the core package.

Looking forward, a child category that doesn't have a static page may use that one of its parent. There may be link to the categories' entries in these pages too for back link. May be some other ideas can be given...

there is an option in a (sadly still) unofficial branch of the static page plugin to associate a category to a static page and to associate a page to a category.

And then there is code to show the headlines or the content of the x first entries of the associated category on the static page.

I hope I can make these changes official in the next time - then this could be a starting point for your interessting ideas!

Hi!

I still don't understand why people want to associate static pages with categories instead of using usual serendipity entries which can already be associated to categories?

How do you associate a category with an entry? I had to make my category-entry sticky, and I assigned it a permalink that invoked the category title, but didn't match the actual category URL.

I also used the template-blocks plugin to make a table of contents for it, but I'm playing around with designing a plugin for that.
