Display archive in ascending sequence?

Is there any way to get the archives to display in ascending sequence -- i.e. first entry for the month is at the top.

Hi!

Yes, you can install the plugin "Extended properties for categories" from spartacus and then set the sort order for each category, as well as the global sort order.

I was hoping for an easier solution.

Of course, I don't know how hard it will be to include these plug ins at my hosted site. It will give me something to struggle with and exercise my mind.

Could you provide a pointer where I might find this plug-in.

Just go to your admin page and click on "Configure Plugins", then "Install New Event Plugin". Search for SPARTACUS; if it's not already installed, click the install icon next to it.

SPARTACUS allows you to install other plugins without the need to download or upload files. Once it's installed, go back to the "Install New Event Plugin" page. All the official plugins available from the central repository will be listed.

Find the "Extended properties for categories" plugin and click the install icon next to it. It will be automatically installed, and you'll be taken to a configuration page. There you can modify how entries will be sorted, along with a bunch of other nifties.

That's it. If SPARTACUS doesn't work for you, you'll have to download the plugin from spartacus.s9y.org, unzip it on your computer, and upload the new directory and all its files to your website's plugins/ directory (an FTP tool like FileZilla or CuteFTP is very useful). Then you can install it from the admin page as usual.

There is no Spartacus in the side bar of my blog's plugins. Headed off to the Spartacus.org to check there.

Couldn't find anything like "Extended properties for categories" at the Spartacus plugins.

The only plugin that had the word "categories" was "Properties/Templates of categories". Could this be the one I am looking for?

There are times that I should just leave things alone...

Downloaded the "serendipity_event_categorytemplates" from Spartacus and then FTPed it into the plugin directory in Serendipity.

Then off to "Configure Plugins" to install where I received a whole list of errors including these:
"...
Error: serendipity_event_statistics
Error: serendipity_event_templatechooser
Error: serendipity_event_textile
Error: serendipity_event_textwiki
..."

Along with the already installed plugins was this:

"Properties/Templates of categories Requirements failed: s9y 0.9
This plugin allows you to change the template and some other properties depending on the selected category."

This whole thing has been an interesting find with the plugins there. However, they appear to be unusable. Could this be a restriction on the part of the hosting site and their included offerings.

Hi!

Which version of Serendipity are you running? Of course you should be running a recent, security-issue free version of Serendipity, which all 0.8.x versions are not.

Did you do anything else via FTP? Maybe delete any other directories? The Error message displays suggests that you removed those directories somehow...

Turns out I have ancient Serendipity release: 0.8.2. The latest version at GoDaddy is 1.1.2.

In order to go to the new version, it would be a good idea to find my entries and make a backup. However, I am unable to find a folder within the Serendipity folder on the domain that contains my entries. Where would that array/database exist. Is it possible it doesn't exist in my hosted space? Doesn't seem possible, but...

My concern is this info from the admin config panel:
Database Type: MySQL
Database host: 10.0.11.40 [Not sure where this points]
Database user: 246232_Wandrin
Database password: blank
Database name: user_246232
Database table prefix: serendipity_
Use persistent connections: No.

It is that "host" that makes me wonder.

I can find my uploaded photos within the serendipity folder, but no blog words.

The entire serendipity folder has been downloaded to my PC. At least I have something. I have also exported a file "rss.php.xhtml" that has all the data. I will have something if I want to rebuild some (or all) of the entries.

My plan is to uninstall 0.8.2. Then I plan to install 1.1.2. Then I will upload the necessary files to make the blog look like before. There must be some file containing all the variables unique to my installation of Serendipity -- i.e. Page title, content of sidebars, etc.... Where is that information stored?

Hi!

Serendipity stores about all of its content in the Database, so you need to have phpMyAdmin (or similar) access to your database to backup it. You might need to contact godaddy to backup it for you.

My plan is to uninstall 0.8.2.

No! Never uninstall serendipity. Serendipity has awesome upgrade routines, where you just need to upload the new version files to your existing installation, and then upgrade using the serendipity admin suite.

If you uninstall serendipity and re-install new, you'll loose entries and everything.

Moving right along.... Finally, a backup has been made of the data base/array.

Rather than overlay the existing 0.8.2 version of Serendipity, I installed Serendipity 1.1.2 in a new folder within my domain. It was my hope to be able to import that 0.8.2 data base into the data base associated with 1.1.2. However, on the drop down menu for importing, there is no option. At least I do not recognize it.

So I used the "Generic RSS import". Not the result I had hoped for, but my blog entries are there with some missing details like category and such -- nothing really important.

So if I decided that I want to blast this install and start over so I can import the "real" data base, how can I import that data base (suffix is .sql)

Yes. Youre idea was wrong, sorry to say that.

Following your instructions, the 0.8.2 was overlaid with 1.1.2. When I went to the admin material it did not recognize the upgrade. I found the note at s9y that said to change the version ID within config_local file back to the old version. Did that. Then it recognized the upgrade. Followed the instructions for the upgrade, but when it tried to create the data base there were beaucoup errors about duplicates, etc. Lots of red error messages. ... and no blog entries either.

So where did I go wrong this time?

Hi!

You should try to recover your 0.8.2 backup (including restoring the database!) because I guess that with installing 1.1.2 already you might have done something irreversible to the database, so that the upgrader could not properly work. It needs to start with a real 0.8.2 database table, not the layout of an additionally installed 1.1.2.

Did you check your serendipity_entries Database table to see if it still contains data?

Unable to find anything like "serendipity_entries". Where would it be found?

My data base does not exist within my domain -- it exists on a separate server at GoDaddy. I have no access to it.

If there is any chance to recover the data base information, this is a review of what has been done to date:

1. GoDaddy was contacted and they made a backup of the database and placed it in the root of my domain (still there) Name of file: user_24623205-15-07.sql

2. Installed Serendipity 1.1.2 in a (new) separate folder named "blog"

3. Imported the Generic RSS Import to create the data base. Obviously, some things are missing. (However, I can live with the result.)

4. Based upon a post on this thread... Installed the 1.1.2 version into the existing "old" folder "Serendipity" where 0.8.2 resides. Automatic update and inclusion of data base did not occur.

5. Based upon an update comment within the FAQ, I changed the version to 0.8.2. When started once again, it recognized the update of software had occurred and proceeded to create the data base. Didn't happen. Lots of errors. No entries appear in the blog.

At this point in time, there is one folder with 1.1.2 and the (incomplete) blog entires. There is a second folder with 0.8.2 over layed with 1.1.2 and no entries. Finally, within my domain there is a backup of the data base before anything was done.

Note: I browsed the backup of the data base. It is complete with the categories, comments, etc.

Is there anyway to import the backup data base into 1.1.2? If not, I believe it is best to drop this exercise at this point. I am content with the material that exists as a result of the import of the RSS.
