Themes won't apply

I did a new installation of Serendipity 1.1. I untarred the file into the root directory of my website. It stopped me about permissions. I changed the root directory to 1777, changed the other directories that were mentioned to 777. Installation continued. Everything works okay except when I choose a theme, it won't apply. It says it applied the theme, but it doesn't show it.

If I add the plugin that lets you choose a theme from the sidebar menu, then that works.

I must have permissions set incorrectly somewhere, but I can't find what to set.

Any suggestions for me?

Hi!

After you switched a style, did you refresh your browser cache when loading your frontend?

The template switcher plugin does that automatically, but if you manually change a theme, your browser must load the new styles properly...?

I feel so stupid. Such a simple solution to a problem that wasn't a problem. You are right. When I hit the refresh button, it switches to the new style.
