Spam Trackback Entries

We are receiving a lot of indecent SPAM trackback entries sent to the editor email addresses.

When we go to review the entries, there are no entries to review, just garbled indecent Subject messages.

Is there a way to eliminate these trackback entries as they are becoming annoying.

Hi!

You can install the "spamblock" serendipity plugin, this allows you to configure some anti-spam measurements.

As with usual email spam, there is no way to completely block spam trackbacks. You either need to disable them, or live with that fact.

Which of the spam blocker plugins create the "alpha numeric letters" that visitors have to type prior to entering a comment?

Also, what are trackbacks specifically used for? Will it affect our blog in any way if we disable them?

As I recall, the standard SpamBlock plugin provides those. They're called CAPTCHAs, so you'd want to enable CAPTCHAs for comments.

Trackbacks are a courtesy from one blogger to another; it's his blog informing your blog that he's just made an entry that references your entry. (Some blogs then add the referer's URL to their entry, which raises their Google score, which makes spammers want to abuse it.) If you're not interested in that, you can turn it off or reject them all.

You can also avoid a lot of spam by turning off the XMLRPC capabilities. This will also prevent you from moblogging, though.

I checked and the captchas are on but when entering a comment, it does not appear.

Also, I noticed when a comment was submitted for approval, the links that are sent to our email (ie view, approve, delete) do not work properly. We cannot view the comments, approve or delete.

Hi!

Captchas are by default not shown for logged in users! So you first need to log out to see them

Also, I noticed when a comment was submitted for approval, the links that are sent to our email (ie view, approve, delete) do not work properly. We cannot view the comments, approve or delete.

For those links to work you need to be logged in prior to visiting your blog, or you have to check the "Remember me" option when you log in to serendipity, which will create a permanent cookie.
