Request: private posting options

Post by wyvvern »

Congratulations on a very promising weblogging application! I have installed and tested a number of blog and CMS applications this summer, and this application has most of the features I am looking for in a weblogging app. And it is clean and easy to install and administer.

There is just one function that I have not seen in the apps I have tried (outside a hosted app like LiveJournal) that would be highly valuable to me: The option to make any post "private" so that only logged in authors could read it.

I think this would be a very popular feature. The nature of weblogging is such that many times an author would like to record something for his/her own benefit, but not share it with the public. Or perhaps he/she is willing to share it only with other members of that weblog.

Ideally, I believe, there would be three levels of privacy available on each post: 1) Public (viewable by any visitor), 2) Members Only (viewable by all members of that weblog) and 3) private (viewable only by the author of the post).

I hope that these ideas will be considered for incorporation in the near future. The addition of this feature would distinguish Serendipity even more from most other weblogging applications which are currently available.

Best of luck to you as you continue to develop this application. :)

Hi!

Thanks for your request - I have added it to our SourceForge request tracker. It is quite easy to implement, but we're currently also in the process of migrating to Smarty templating. As soon that is done, we will take care of your feature, combined with a "sticky post" option.

Best regards,
Garvin.

Hi, sorry to drag up an old post, but didn't see this on the todo list and wanted to add my two cents... It'd be really nice to also be able to create groups of authors who can read certain private posts, instead of just letting anyone who is logged in read them all. :)

That would be possible...but IMHO yet a bit overkill for a blog. Serendipity is not really a CMS, and not aimed to be - even though it fulfills some needs of a CMS.

The feature could be implemented by a plugin, so let's hope for a contribution. :-)

Regards,
Garvin

Well, I'd planned to do it for my blog (before I decided reinventing the wheel was better done by others and switched to s9y) so maybe if I get the time I'll come up with a way to do that. :)
